NEW YORK (1010 WINS)  -- An attempt to stop a suspected burglar almost cost two Nassau police officers their lives.

Police say two plainclothes officers were watching a car in Valley Stream Wednesday afternoon which they suspected was involved in an earlier burglary spree. When the suspect, Richard Maldonado, 48, entered the car, the officers attempted to stop him. 

Maldonado sped off while trying to run over the two officers and fled the scene, police said. Maldonado was eventually stopped by NYPD officers on the Van Wyck Expressway in Queens.

Maldonado is charged with two counts of attempted murder of a police officer, four counts of burglary from previous events and criminal possession of stolen property.
