Good Samaritan Rescues Injured Man from Hudson River

STONY POINT, N.Y. (AP)  -- A 61-year-old kayaker helped rescue a man who was seriously injured when his personal watercraft crashed on rocks in the Hudson River in Rockland County.

Police in Stony Point, 40 miles north of New York City, say John Thomas, 43, of Highland Falls suffered head injuries and broken bones Thursday afternoon. He yelled for help for about an hour late yesterday afternoon before his cries were heard by a man who was kayaking nearby.

The unidentified Good Samaritan paddled to shore, then walked to a nearby home and asked someone to call police.

Emergency crews had to carry Thomas over rough terrain before he could be flown by helicopter to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla.

His condition wasn't immediately available.
