BELVIDERE, N.J. (AP) -- A woman who fled New Jersey with her two preschool daughters in 1993 during a custody dispute pleaded guilty to custodial interference on Friday.
Michelle Kimble faces three years' probation and a fine, though the amount of the fine has not been determined, according to Angela Borkowski, Warren County First Assistant Prosecutor.
Kimble pleaded guilty to interference with custody, which was a third-degree offense in 1993. It has since been upgraded to a second-degree offense, Borkowski said.
Kimble was arrested last month in Wallington, Vt., where she was known as Emily Pels. Police allege she used at least one other alias.
She alleged that her then-husband, Daniel Kimble, had been physically and sexually abusive to her and at least one of her children, according to a police affidavit in the case.
Authorities said Michelle Kimble and the children disappeared from their White Township home about a year after the couple separated, as Daniel Kimble was asking for more visitation with the girls.
Police have questioned her story of abuse, noting that no abuse charges were ever filed against Daniel Kimble during or after his marriage to Michelle.
``She never contested that she did what she did,'' Frank Whittlesey, an attorney representing Kimble, said Friday. ``That doesn't mean she still doesn't believe her actions were necessary or justified. She just recognized this is the legal consequence she has to face.''
Both of the girls are now students at colleges outside Vermont.
