Port Authority Gets $45 Million DHS Grant for Port Security

WASHINGTON (AP)  -- The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is getting a windfall from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

The port authority has been awarded more than $45 million. That's the largest amount given out to any single entity in the country.

It is part of a $65 million port security program in New Jersey.

Senators Frank Lautenberg and Robert Menendez announced the grants Friday.

In addition to the port security grants, New Jersey will share a $175 million grant for rail security with New York and Connecticut.

The state also received about $1 million for protecting chemical facilities, nuclear and electric power plants, stadiums and other high-risk facilities.
