1 Dead, 7 Hurt after Van Jumps Curb in Harlem

NEW YORK (1010 WINS)  -- An out-of-control van jumped a curb and barreled into bystanders near the entrance to a crowded subway station Friday, killing the driver and hurting seven people, authorities said.

A 2-year-old boy was pinned under the van, the Fire Department said. A 7-year-old girl and five female adults were hurt, but their lives did not appear to be in danger, the Fire Department said. Fifty-eight-year-old Cesar Tabora was pronounced dead at the scene.

The van roared south on Lexington Avenue and crashed onto the sidewalk near the busy corner of East 125th Street, said witness Edward Jones. He saw the wreck as he helped a shopper from a nearby supermarket put her purchases into a taxi shortly before 7 p.m.

Jones said he pleaded with victims to stay still until rescuers arrived.

"They looked like they didn't even know what happened," said Jones, 32, of the Bronx. He said the van's driver appeared to have passed out.

The van plowed into a wall surrounding stairs leading to the 4, 5 and 6 subway lines, sending debris flying. Soda cans, a small shoe and a shopper's cart were strewn around the area.

All the victims were taken to hospitals and all were listed in stable condition. Their names were not released.

Police were investigating what caused the crash.
