NEW YORK (AP) -- A historic Greenwich Village theater where Bette Davis made her New York stage debut has been saved from a possible demolition.
The Provincetown Playhouse, considered the birthplace of off-Broadway and alternative theater, presented Eugene O'Neill's first plays.
New York University had planned to build a new theater at the site it owns on Macdougal Street. But preservationists persuaded NYU officials to restore the building instead.
The 1940s-era facade will be refurbished, along with the interior and the 1920s seats. The theater was created from four 19th century town houses.
NYU will also erect a new six-story building to be used by its law school, as well as another new theater.
