Injured Army Reservist Needs Help with Home Repairs
WEST ORANGE, N.J. (1010 WINS) -- Just two months after they moved into their new West Orange home, Army Reservist, Sgt. Harold Ross and his family were forced to leave.
It wasn't long after Ross' 3-year-old son got sick that lab results showed there were higher than acceptable levels of lead in the family's new home, Operation Homefront, a New York/New Jersey charity, said in a release.
The boy was later diagnosed with lead poisoning.
The staggeringly high levels of lead in the home forced the family to find another place to live immediately to protect their son from further exposure.
"We feel very blessed we discovered the problem as quickly as we did,” says Ross. “The impact on our son’s health could have been devastating within a few short months causing problems that could have destroyed his life."
Lead abatement can be extremely costly and homeowner’s insurance doesn't cover the costs associated with resolving the problem.
Operation Homefront of NY/NJ has been helping the Ross family, however, with very limited resources, the charity said. Now the organization is turning to the public and requesting building material donations and professional contractors willing to donate in-kind services to make the Ross’ home safe.
Anyone who can help is asked to contact Operation Homefront by visiting its website or calling Tracy Handschuh at 1-866-401-5541.
