Riding a Heatwave: New York Sizzles Through Tuesday

NEW YORK (1010 WINS)  -- Get used to the heat!

The season's first heatwave is well underway is and showing no signs of retreat.

Temperatures are expected to be in the 90s through Tuesday with AccuWeather 'Real Feel' temperatures approaching 100 - - or higher.

Forecasters are calling for a Sunday high of close to the record 95 degrees, set in 1933.

Highs in the lows to mid-90s are also expected Monday and Tuesday.

Heat Advisory is in effect from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday and the New York City Office of Emergency Management has opened cooling centers throughout the five boroughs. Cooling centers are public places, such as community centers, where air conditioning is available. Find the nearest cooling center by calling 311 or click HERE.

Experts say it's best to turn on the air conditioning at home, or plan to go to a place like a shopping mall or library that has it.
And drink water. Stay in the shade if outdoors. And never ever leave kids unattended in hot cars. It could seriously injure or kill them.

Going to the beach might be another option for cooling off: water temperatures are in the 60s.

Con Edison is urging customers to conserve energy this weekend, hoping to avoid another round of blackouts.  Officials offer several tips that help keep the juice flowing:

Close shades, blinds and curtains; about 40 percent of unwanted heat comes through windows.

- Turn off lights and appliances when you leave your home.

- Keep thermostats at 78 degrees or above.

- Close off unused rooms, or block the vents in those rooms.

- Run major appliances such as washers, dryers and dishwashers in the early morning or late at night.

TIPS to beat the HEAT!
