NEW YORK (AP) -- A manhole exploded in Brooklyn Thursday morning shattering nearby windows - and forcing a day care center to be evacuated.
Local residents are furious according to 1010 WINS' Glenn Schuck. People said they started calling at around 5:30 a.m. because some manholes were already smoldering, but Con Edison representatives dispute that claim.
The New York City Fire Department said the manhole was at the intersection of Sutter and Montauk Avenues in the East New York section of Brooklyn. Reports of the blasts came in around 8:30 a.m. Con Edison says smoldering cables caused a fire in the manhole, and the resulting blast.
Con Ed spokesman Chris Olert said there were no outages or reports of injuries. A utility crew is on the scene to determine why the cable caught fire.
