NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Police are looking for a car thief who attempted to run down an officer on the Bronx Whitestone Bridge.
Police exchanged gunfire with a carjacking suspect on the northbound Hutchinson River Parkway in the Bronx shortly before 12 p.m.
Greg Lombardi, the vice president of the Bridge and Tunnel Police Association, said a Range Rover was stolen from a car wash in Queens shortly before 12 p.m. Lombardi said the thief grabbed the vehicle just as the owner was trying to re-enter it after it was washed.
1010 WINS' Al Jones reported Police pursued the Range Rover SUV across the Whitestone and northbound up the Hutch, and gunfire was exchanged.
Lombardi said the man had gunned the engine at the Whitestone Bridge, jumped a curb, and tried to run over a bridge officer who then fired his weapon and flattened the vehicle's tires.
Police found the car abandoned in the area at Brush and Lafayette Avenues, in the Schuylerville section of the Bronx.
The search is now on for the suspect or suspects, and Jones reported police were asking people in the area where the car exited for information or any connections to the incident.
It is not known whether the NYPD or the Triborough Bridge & Tunnel Authority police were involved, or whether there were any injuries.
