NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- It was a popular celebration from 1903 to 1954, before the Coney Island Mardi Gras faded away. Since 1983, it has been brought back to life and is now known as the 'Mermaid Parade.'
Every year, a new King Neptune and Queen Mermaid is selected to lead the celebration on its march through the streets of Coney Island. Savitri D., is 2008's Queen Mermaid and a Brooklyn native. Wearing King Neptune's crown this year is Reverend Billy.

The king and queen ride in the parade and traditionally assist in the opening of the Atlantic Ocean for the Summer season. To begin the season, they march down beach and cut several ribbons which represent the passing of the seasons. To satisfy the Sea Gods, the king and queen also throw fruit into the ocean.
In a state of protest, Savitri D., this year's Queen Mermaid, went on a hunger strike to protest the development plans for the Coney Island area.
