Nassau County Police said three armed men burst into a house in Uniondale, Long Island at 1:00 a.m. Monday and demanded to know where the money was kept.
The men bound nine people, most of them students at nearby Hofstra University, with duct tape. The rented home was an off-campus residence near Hofstra University's Hempstead, N.Y. campus.
Nassau Detective Ray Cote told reporters Monday that one of the men who lived at the house was the target of the invasion.
That man, who was not identified, had called police from his bedroom when the home invasion began.
Investigators said the armed men kicked in the man's bedroom door and pistol-whipped him before fleeing with several stolen cell phones, cash, and a 46-inch flat screen TV.
Police said the injured man was treated and released at a local hospital.
There were no reports of how the suspects fled the scene or in what direction, police said.
