15th-Century Sculpture Damaged at Met Museum

NEW YORK (AP)  -- A 15th-century sculpture at Manhattan's Metropolitan Museum of Art has been damaged after it came loose from its moorings and fell to the floor.

The damaged piece is a terracotta sculpture of Saint Michael the Archangel by Andrea della Robbia, the museum said.

It fell late Monday night or early Tuesday. It had been hanging over a doorway in the European Paintings and Decorative Arts Galleries since 1996.

A preliminary investigation shows the 62-inch-by-32-inch piece can be repaired, the museum said.

As a result of the accident, the Met is inspecting all of its pedestals and wall mounts.
