Plan Would Create NJ Turnpike Express Lanes

TRENTON, N.J. (AP)  -- Gov. Jon Corzine's plan to lease the New Jersey Turnpike isn't entirely dead.

John Montone reports

The Star-Ledger of Newark reports that state officials discussing letting private firms operate some lanes of the toll road to help pay for major transportation improvements without the huge toll increases that generated such widespread opposition.

One plan would set up privately run lanes just for truck and bus traffic on the full length of the 122-mile Turnpike. Another plan would create ``express lanes'' where motorists would pay a premium to zoom past traffic.

Senate President Richard Codey and Sen. Raymond Lesniak said they have discussed the idea with Gov. Jon Corzine, and plan to have further talks.
