Doorman and Porter Clear Burning West Side Building

NEW YORK (1010 WINS)  --  A doorman and a porter are back at work on Monday, a day after they raced to clear a burning West Side building on Sunday.

Juliet Papa reports

Andy Brahimaj, 19, a doorman, had just finished watering the flowers in front of his building on West 73rd Street when he saw smoke billowing from the building across the street.

He and Izet Neljkovic, 44, a porter, rushed across the street to alert the residents of the fire, and they credit a third doorman for calling 911 quickly.

Brahimaj said they rang doorbells, banged on doors and yelled "fire, fire" to clear the building. Everyone escaped safely.

It was raining glass as the people left the building because the upper windows were popping from the heat, Brahimaj said.

Neljkovic said he didn't think twice about rushing to help the people in the building. And he's happy everyone escaped safely.

The cause of the fire -- which started on the top floor and spread to the roof -- is under investigation.
