NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- The government is using goats to clear some weeds.
John Montone Reports
The National Park Service has employed a few goats to clean up the weeds at Fort Wadsworth in Staten Island.
"We find that no lawn mower can climb up to the areas that we need cleared like goats can," said the National Park Service assistant superintendent Dave Taft. "They're very green. Whatever they leave is completely degradable."
Goats are able to eat 20 percent of their body weight, says goat herder Larry Honick.
Fourteen goats have already cleared densely overgrown sections at Fort Wadsworth.
These kids can also be seen as heroes to taxpayers: no overtime, no pensions, and no meal allowance.
