11 Charged in Long Island Car Dealership Scam

MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP)  -- An investigation into a 2007 murder at a Long Island car dealership led authorities to uncover a tangled web of financial schemes, prosecutors announced Wednesday.

Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice says 11 people were arrested in the case which involved identity theft and fraud against used car customers.

Mona Rivera reports:

The case involves stolen identities that allowed dozens of so-called ``mystery'' owners to drive high-end vehicles.

Middle men used stolen IDs to buy luxury cars on behalf of people who didn't want their names in state motor vehicle databases.

Phony loan applications _ naming bogus buyers with forged signatures _ also were uncovered.

Nassau DA Kathleen Rice said Wednesday she could only speculate on the reasons why people would hide their identity. Says Rice: ``None of them are good.''

A spokesman said drug dealers and other criminal types might be prime candidates for such anonymity.
