NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP)  -- Connecticut prison officials say an inmate at Garner Correctional Institution in Newtown is dead after he apparently hanged himself with a bedsheet.

Prison spokesman Brian Garnett says the inmate's cellmate reported the death about 4:30 a.m. Wednesday. The inmate was found with a bedsheet tied around his neck. The other end of the sheet was tied to the cell door.

Garnett says the inmate was taken to Danbury Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The body was taken to the state medical examiner's office.

Garnett says the inmate's name will be released after family members are told of the death.

Garner Correctional Institution is a high-security prison.
