MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) -- Storm water runoff following a series of thundershowers has led Long Island officials to close several beaches because of concerns about high levels of bacteria.
Closed until further notice are four beaches in Nassau County: the Biltmore Beach Club and Phillip Healy beaches in Massapequa and the Hewlett Point and Island Park beaches in the Five Towns area.
In Suffolk County, Bayport Beach in Bayport, Tanner Park in Copiague and Minasseroke Beach in Strongs Neck remain closed.
Health department officials say storm water runoff often causes elevated bacteria levels.
The National Weather Service predicts heavy rain could cause flash flooding in the New York metropolitan area through Thursday night.
