Heavy Rain Sweeps across Area

NEW YORK (1010 WINS/AP)  -- Commuters faced a wet start Thursday morning.

AccuWeather Alerts and Advisories

A flash flood watch was in effect through the afternoon for the five boroughs and most adjacent western suburbs and through this evening for Connecticut and Long Island.

Traffic and Transit

The National Weather Service said the showers and scattered thunderstorms will finally end from west to east later in the day.

Most of the area took a pounding from thunderstorms on Wednesday as well.

Airport Delays

Power to over 13,000 Long Island Power Authority customers was knocked out in the afternoon and the wet weather also caused a number of extensive delays on the Long Island Rail Road.

Thousands of evening NJ Transit commuters and Amtrak travelers were delayed Wednesday after a power outage snarled train service in the region.

Around 4:40 p.m. Amtrak reported a low voltage condition on the Northeast Corridor after the passing of a severe thunderstorm.

Service was restored nearly an hour later with significant delays. Amtrak says they are investigating the cause of the outage.

Builders, contractors and property owners were urged to secure construction sites and buildings as a precaution against high winds.

Storm water runoff following a series of thundershowers has led Long Island officials to close several beaches because of concerns about high levels of bacteria.

There were also a number of down trees reported throughout the area.
