Feds: Man Caught Smuggling Birds in Luggage at JFK

NEW YORK (1010 WINS)  -- A Brooklyn man was arrested at JFK airport for allegedly trying smuggle 13 finches into the country from Guyana.

The singing birds were meant to be entered in a contest popular in the Guyanese community during which people wager on which finch has the best voice, federal authorities told the Daily News.

Customs and Border Patrol officers became suspicious when they noticed grass seed in Terrence McLean's luggage. The birds, which could be worth as much as $5,000 each, were hidden inside hair curlers.

Under Guyanese law, the export of wild birds - including finches - is illegal. McLean, a hospital worker, was released on his own recognizance, the News reported.
