NEW YORK (AP) -- Community activists anxious about a plan to blast out rock near the celebrated Bronx High School of Science have won a temporary victory.
A judge has blocked the blasting at least until a Sept. 3 hearing.
The blasting plan is tied to the construction of a New York City water treatment plant. But lawyers for both sides say Wednesday's ruling doesn't stop building on the plant itself.
The blasting would dislodge up to 9,000 cubic feet of rock for an underground chamber and shaft related to the plant and a reservoir.
Earlier plans called for drilling. Residents are concerned about noise and say the change needs a formal environmental study.
The city says it's doing a preliminary environmental review and believes a court will say it suffices.
