Freehold Councilman's Remarks on Latinos Called Appalling

FREEHOLD BOROUGH, N.J. (AP)  -- A Freehold Borough city councilman is coming under fire for comments that some in the Latino community call offensive.

1010 WINS AUDIO: Steve Sandberg Reports

In a Web site, Councilman Mark LeVine wrote that there, "a very promiscuous flavor'' in parts of the Hispanic community, the Asbury Park Press reported.

LeVine went on to say that some of "these people'' often expect the state to subsidize their mistakes when they have large families that they can't afford to support.

Lazaro Cardenas, from the Monmouth County chapter of the Latino Leadership Alliance, said he was offended by the comments.

LeVine said he'd apologize if anyone felt it was necessary, but said he would not resign, and added that he represents everyone in the borough.
