Pedestrian Safety Questioned After 4 Deaths



NEW YORK -- A rally was held at City Hall Sunday afternoon, after four pedestrians were killed in seperate traffic incidents across the city this weekend.

Late Friday night, Mario Sagastume, 47, of Suffolk County, was hit by a beige Nissan Maxima in East New York, Brooklyn. Sagastume fell in the crosswalk of Ashford Street near Liberty Avenue around 12:10 a.m. The Maxima sped off after the incident and Sagastume died about three hours later at Brookdale University Hospital.

In Manhattan, a 25 year-old man was hit by a van on the lower East Side near Essex and DeLancey Streets, about 4 a.m. Saturday. The unidentified victim, who was visiting from Massachusettes, died at the scene. After police questoned the driver, he was released.

A school bus hit and killed Alice Chow in Kew Gardens, Queens about 1 p.m. Saturday. The 49 year-old apparently stumbled in front of the bus near Austin St. and Lefferts Blvd. Chow died at Jamaica Hospital about an hour later. No children were on the bus at the time of the accident.

A fourth pedestrian was also killed this weekend, but details are still sketchy as to what happened.
