Both programs coincide with a national initiative called "Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest.'' The program begins Friday and continues through Labor Day weekend.
Under New York's STOP-DWI program, law enforcement agencies across the state will be out in force. They'll be using sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols, among other methods, to reduce the incidence of drinking and driving.
Under New York law, driving with a blood alcohol content of 0.08 or higher will put motorists over the limit and under arrest.
In Nassau County, police have arrested 758 people for driving while toxicated. Police Commissioner Lawrence Mulvey says, "My enforcement teams will concentrate on areas where DWI offenses are most likely to occur. We remain determined to rid the roadways of those who blatantly disregard the law by driving drunk."
