Denzel Washington at Mount Vernon City Hall Tuesday

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. (1010 WINS)  -- High School athletes in Mount Vernon will have Denzel Washington to thank every time they score a touchdown or a goal this fall.

The Oscar winner and Mount Vernon native was at City Hall Tuesday pledging his support for the "Save Our Sports" initiative.

Earlier this month, Washington donated $100,000 of his own money to program, meant to replace funds for interscholastic sports that were slashed in an austerity budget for the upcoming school year.

Mayor Clinton Young enlisted Washington, Chicago Bulls star Ben Gordon and other Mount Vernon notables to save school sports in the community.
