Birds Returning to NJ's Meadowlands

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- A preliminary report released by the Meadowlands Commission finds the ecosystem is making a comeback hosting a wide variety of birds.

Between last August and August 2004, the Audubon Society counted more than 80,000 birds representing 181 species.

Twenty-nine species are listed by the state as endangered. They include bald eagles, peregrine falcons and and Cooper's hawks.

Officials say the findings will eventually help policymakers determine what species are in need of greater protection in the
32-square-mile area that covers parts of Bergen and Hudson counties.
