State Senator Releases List of Troubled Restaurants

NEW YORK (1010 WINS)  -- What do El Barrio Restaurant on East 110 Street in Manhattan, Merry Jerry's Jamaican Restaurant on Saratoga Avenue in Brooklyn and New Chopstick House on Queens Boulevard in Forest Hills, Queens, have in common? They're all on the 2008 edition of "The Dirty Dozen," the annual list of top New York City restaurants that have failed a health inspection.

"The Dirty Dozen" is part of New York State Senator Jeff Klein's report "Restaurants That Are Enough to Make You Sick: An Analysis of Unsanitary Conditions At New York City Restaurants."

Kathleen Maloney reports:

If you're not interested in focusing only on the negative, Klein has also released "The Sparkling 12" - a list of the Big Apple's cleanest restaurants.

Klein hopes the city will implement a letter grading system - and posts the grades - so that consumers can more easily evaluate the status of a given restaurant.
