Farewell to Yankee Stadium

NEW YORK -- I will be attending my final Yankee game at the storied Stadium this week - and I will cry. What else can you do when you say goodbye to something that's been a constant your whole life?

In this throw-away, temporary society, you can't say that about much of anything these days, especially something that has brought you so much joy for such a long period of time.

Unlike many people who remember exactly how old they were and what team the Yankees played the first time they ever went to the Stadium, I don't remember that at all - and I don't really mind. Because I grew up just blocks away and Yankee Stadium was a big part of my young life. Unlike today, when you have to buy tickets way in advance for a decent seat, or plan your commute and expenses, going to the Stadium back then was " hey, let's go to the game tomorrow!" And off we went, my mom packing lunches, my dad buying peanuts and a scorecard, my brother and I wearing our Yankee caps ready to yell and cheer.

And there we were, through the lean years of the late 60s and early 70s, the wild Bronx Zoo, the games at Shea, and then of course, the dynamic and dramatic post season play in the 90s.

But even with the changes of a renovation, of managers and players, the constant was the magical feeling.

Whether you sat in the old green seats under the classic facade, or moved up to a better piece of blue real estate, you were part of what was inside. Part of history and tradition that, even as it continued for the next generation, remained the same.

My memories include walking on the red clay warning track to see the monuments that were still on the field. There was the first bat day, ball day and cap day, and all the kids on my block went. Then, the good fortune of attending play-off and World Series games, and as a reporter, having the opportunities to personally interview Derek Jeter, Joe Torre and Mariano Rivera.

And I do believe in ghosts. Just ask the players, and they will tell you they are respectful of those who came before, who played where they now play, who seem to inhabit the air, and remain embedded in that red clay dirt.

The new stadium will be the new stadium; the same traditions and pinstripes, but different air. It's a different time, and it will be a different place.

But I hold out the hope that someone has the good sense to take a shovel's worth of the dirt from the current Stadium and throw it on the new field to carry forward what came before, to link the future to the past where the greats once stood, and to allow little kids like me who once walked in wonder, to still feel that magical feeling.

1996 World Series
What a great feeling to take my father to his first World Series Game. It was game 6 with seats right behind the Atlanta dugout. It still brings tears to my eyes.

Yankee Stadium Memories
When I went to my first Yankee Game in 1975, I really believed that Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth were buried out there.

Bathroom
I remember going to Yankee Stadium as a kid and thinking just how clean the bathrooms were! Go figure.

Mostly Hype..
I am old enough to have gone to the real Yankee Stadium before the tacky 70's renovation. Whereas the old stadium reeked of history and gave you chills, the new one never had any charm at all.

Final games
I just got home from the Thursday night game. It was like New Year's Eve; very emtional, as people took pictures and said goodbye.

Landmark
There is so much history in this ballpark, they should make it a landmark and not tear it down.

Bleacher Bum
In 1968, I remember sitting in the "Black Seats" in dead center field as a kid and thinking how great these seats were. You actually see right into the cathers mitt, right down the middle of the plate. I'm going to miss Yankees Stadium.

Yankee Stadium
It's a shame that a venerable stadium with such a rich history will be torn down. Couldn't it be designated an historic landmark, to stop it from being demolished? There must be ways the old park can still generate revenue. A piece of NY will be lost if the house of Ruth comes down.

NO HITTERS!
I was fortunate enough to witness both Jim Abbotts and Rag's famous 4thof July No Hitter - I also attended the Pine Tar Game and Game 6 in 96!

Yankee memories as a kid
My parents took me to my first game against the Orioles in the Bleachers in 1959; how impressed I was at the sheer size of the outfield ! Also, in 1963, The Mick's oinch hit HR in his first AB after having been sidelined for e months due to a broken foot !

Original Stadium
I remember there were actually seats behind the stanchions in the upper deck. During the renovation, they needed to pull back the grandstand to properly support it without the poles.

Yankee Stadium Memories
Farewell to Yankee Stadium. My wedding anniversary is also 9/21. But my fondest memory is when my ex-husband was a city carpenter and laminated the wall in Yankee Stadium back in 1974.

$3.00 To Sit Where?
In 1973 when NO ONE wanted to go to the stadium, I bought great seats for $3.00 to sit right behind home plate. I still look at one of the stubs and smile. Too bad I will not be able to see my team play in the flesh anymore. MUCH too expensive now.

Who remembers Seve hamilton and that Folly Floater? What a hoot!

Relationships
Yankee Stadium is more than balls and strikes, touchdowns or religious revivals. It is for most of us about relationships. In the spring of 1970 my father took me out of school early and we went to the stadium. The score of that game has long ecscaped my memory, but the excitement of that afternoon and the importance of the time together resonate to this day. In fact, I still have vivid images of the monuments, and my dads rememberances of number 4, who like himself was strong, decent and taken to soon... Yankee Stadium will no longer be the same physical entity, but it lives in the hearts and minds of its fans. William Grodman Weston, CT

Sorry to see the affordable ticket go the way of the dinosaur. I will miss it.

the '96 series
I was at the Stadium for all the bedlam and I remember that the upper deck actually vibrated because the shouting and jumping and cheering was so intense. Pretty amazing

Neighborhood Kid
My Dad grew up in the shadows of the Stadium. He took me there for many "Bat Days" and I took my 2 children there. Now they're kids will never go into the greatness. Capitalism has prevailed. Wh will be able to afford entry into the new Ball Park".

Yankee Stadium Memories
Going to Yankee stadium with my dad is like going with a kid to a candy store. My dad is an avid baseball fan and like myself a true Yankee fan. There is something truly special about that ballpark. We will both miss baseball's greatest cathedral with its very special timeline from Babe to DJ! Marisol from the Bronx!

Happiest Place on Earth
Just wish everybody can put the money aside for a minute and reflect on all the great lifetime memories that were made between the lines on that field. The sights, sounds, smells and friends we shared conversations with at the Stadium will live with us forever. Thank you George Steinbrenner for caring about winning so much. You gave us hope every year.

sad day
With all the memories and history, why on earth must the Stadium go? Why couldn't it be taken care of, painted, renovated, like they take care of other landmark institutions? Fenway Park is a treasure and it was treated as such. It was restored. Remember the fuss when Radio City was going to go? Carnegie Hall? Too bad money is the only thing that talks -- or is listened to.

Stadium Memories
After a game back in '79 or'80, my parents were driving out of the lot. I was sitting in the backseat. We sat in a long line of cars on the ramp to get to the Deegan. The players lot is right there. We look to our right & in the row of cars next to us we see Graig Nettles. He had his window opened & looked over to us & said "hi". A few cars later, Goose Gossage pulls up. Same thing happens, he says "hi". As a little kid, I was speechless. One of my favorites in a long list of memories.

Legacy
One of my greatest joys in life was watching the look on my son's and daughter's faces when they took their look at the stadium and the field. It made me feel like I was six all over again. Good bye old friend.

Don't Knock It Down
It just kills me that they'll knock down the real Yankee Stadium. I know the 1970's redo isn't "the original" but it still stood on the same footprint. It won't be the same going across the street. From everything I see on the new stadium, it seems tacky. Getting used to the move would have been a lot easier to take were they going to keep the old Stadium standing. It's all about money I'm afraid, the affordable seats will be going the way of the dinosaur. Thanks for the memories. Boston S u c k s.

1st game
My uncle John took me to my 1st Yankee game in the summer of 1982. It was againts Richie Zisk and the Seattle mariners. I tell you, it was the biggest thrill for a young boy whom just immigrated the states 2 years earlier. Ken Griffey Sr hit 2 homers. The yankees lost the game 10-8 but it was everything i ever hope 4. Since then my dad and I when to the stadium in 1987, in was part of history as Don Mattingly hit his 6 grandslam of the season in they beat the Redsox. My last game at the stadium 1999. I will never forget all those experiences at the house the Ruth Build. I will miss it!

Great Last Memory
I'll never forget the Yankees agreeing to let fans on the field before the last game and getting to the stadium at 1:45 to experience the wonderful ineptitude of the organization in failing to let in the majority of fans who showed up extraordinarily early to take advantage of this offer only to realize the organization was too incompetent to move the line along to let everyone in. They should have announced it would be limited to the first 5000 in line or otherwise came out after two hours and told the people (fools) who eventually waited in line for FIVE hours that they're not getting on the field. That's my last memory, the total disregard for the fans and the corporate greed (and fraud on the financial side) for the new stadium. Enjoy paying $850 for a good seat next year...suckers!!!

Wher have all the fans gone
Maybe with the financial distress that this country is facing and the difficulty the average family is going through to make ends meet both the Yankee organization and its players can settle for a little less money and give us an opportunity to play spectator.
