11-Day-Old Boy Dies Despite Officers' Heroic Efforts

NEW YORK (1010 WINS)  -- Two police officers tried desperately to save an infant who had gone into cardiac arrest at a Brooklyn apartment Friday.

The police arrived at the 14th floor apartment of the Van Dyke Houses in the Brownsville section of the borough around 9 a.m. where they found the 11-day -old boy in cardiac arrest, authorities said.

The two officers reportedly took the boy from his mother and ran to the elevator. The elevator stopped for an unknown reason trapping the officers inside, officials said.

After 20 seconds passed the two officers forced open the doors and climbed out of the elevator and ran, with the boy, down eight flights of stairs, police said.

The officers rushed the boy to Brookdale Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The New York City Housing Authority says a possible excess weight condition on the elevator caused the safety features to kick in pausing the elevator on the eighth floor.

The elevator has been removed from service as the Department of Buildings investigates whether the weight limits of the elevator were the reason for the 20-second lapse in service.
