FBI Halts Dig for Mobster Bones at L.I. Field

EAST FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (AP)  -- The FBI has temporarily suspended digging in a field in New York where the body of a mobster was discovered buried and where two others may yet be found.

FBI spokesman James Margolin tells Newsday that the bureau had "not abandoned the search'' but was considering other approaches. Bureau agents have been on the site in East Farmingdale for 12 days working with shovels and backhoes.

Authorities have reportedly been acting on a tip from an informant who said three bodies may be buried there.

The badly decomposed remains of William Cutolo -- a feared mobster with the Colombo crime family who vanished nearly a decade ago -- was discovered Oct. 6 during the dig at the industrial park.
