NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Police were hunting for two gunmen who opened fire at a Brooklyn beauty salon, killing one man and wounding four bystanders including an off-duty police officer who was getting her hair done.
Sonia Rincon Reports
Lethania Garcia, 20, was shot at least once in the head Monday afternoon inside the salon, De Lux Gallery, on Fulton Street in the leafy Fort Greene neighborhood, police said.
Police spokesman Paul J. Browne says Garcia was ``clearly the target'' of the shooting, which broke out about 1:30 p.m. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Garcia was outside the Cake Man Raven Confectionary Shop when the two gunmen leaped from a sport utility vehicle, ran toward him and started shooting, police said. He fled down the street, ducking into the salon. The armed men followed, guns blazing.
``Everyone was running for their life,'' said witness and nearby tire store manager Joseph Fequiere, 44, in Tuesday editions of The New York Times. ``I went and hid in my store until it was over.''
At least 10 shots were fired, witnesses said. Shell casings littered the street.
Wounded in the salon were a 41-year-old off-duty police officer with the 76th precinct who was shot in the foot, police said. She was unarmed at the time.
A stylist at the salon, which is on a busy commercial strip next to a restaurant and other stores, was shot in the legs. Two other bystanders also were shot in their legs. The wounded victims were in stable condition Monday night, police said.
None of the bystanders were identified. The shooters escaped in what witnesses described as a blue Chevrolet Tahoe and were being sought, police said.
No one had been arrested by Monday night, and police said they did not know the motive for the shooting.
