NEW YORK (1010 WINS/AP) -- Residents across the Tri-State area woke up to a harsh reality Tuesday - - the fall is coming to a close and cooler temperatures are likely here to stay.
Some Garden State residents saw the first snow of the season Tuesday and more is expected this evening in the state's higher elevations.
A light snowfall hit Trenton and other areas of central Jersey around mid-morning, though it didn't stick. No accumulation was expected except in higher elevations, but temperatures in the 30s and 40s in most parts of the state gave the state a winter-like feel.
The rainy, windy weather is causing flight delays at La Guardia Airport - arriving flights are experiencing 3 hour delays and departing flights are running 30 minutes behind schedule. At Newark International Airport is experiencing delays of just over 2 hours.
According to Accuweather, we can expect colder temperatures in the city today with highs in the upper 40s. It is expected to become very windy with rain which could get heavy at times and possibly a thunderstorm. Wet snow could mix with the rain north and west of the city, especially later this afternoon.
A wind advisory is in effect in many parts of the New Jersey, where forecasters are predicting gusts up to 45 mph .A winter weather advisory is in effect until 4 a.m. Wednesday for Sussex County.
Forecasters say an offshore storm will whip up winds to 30 to 40 mph, with gusts to 60 possible. That could down tree limbs and utility lines.
A wind advisory is in effect for other parts of New Jersey, where forecasters are predicting gusts up to 45 mph. Rain will turn to snow and up to 3 inches are possible in the higher elevations.
Afternoon temperatures are expected to fall, reaching 39 degrees by this evening in Midtown. Tonight, expect blustery and cold conditions with clouds and a rain or snow shower with a low of 36.
