Pit Bull Attacks Pregnant Bronx Woman

NEW YORK (1010 WINS)  -- A pit bull attacked a pregnant woman in the Bronx early Monday morning, forcing an officer to shoot and kill the animal.

Al Jones reports.

According to police, the unprovoked attack occurred near the intersection of East Tremont and Boston Road.

Witnesses tell 1010 WINS the pregnant woman was selling newspapers near a train station when the dog trotted over to the woman and took "a chunk out of her leg."

A passerby, Johnny Hernandez, who was taking his son to school and a transit cop rushed to the woman's rescue.

"I put the dog on the ground and put my knee on his neck...I repeatedly punched it in the snout...at which point it released," Hernandez said.

The officer, who was bitten in the hand, fatally shot the dog in the head. The woman was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital in an unknown condition.
