No Indictment for NYC Officer in Deadly Shooting

NEW YORK (AP)  -- A New York City grand jury has declined to indict a police officer who fatally shot a knife-wielding man with a history of mental problems.

The Manhattan district attorney's office said Thursday the panel refused to indict Officer Micah Adler in the July 17 shooting of Spencer Parris. Police say Parris' girlfriend reported he locked her out of their Upper East Side apartment and prevented her from collecting her things. They say Adler knocked on the door, and Parris rushed out with a knife.

Police say Adler fired after Parris ignored orders to drop the knife.

Police say the girlfriend told them the 39-year-old Parris had bipolar disorder and had threatened suicide.

A police spokesman said the NYPD considered the shooting justified.
