NEW YORK -- A New York City survey says that Metro North and Long Island Rail Road train stations in the five boroughs are in bad shape. The report by city Comptroller William Thompson says the MTA has billed the city for nearly $74 million in maintenance from April 2004 to March of this year.
But the comptroller says the third rail was exposed at 11 of 14 Metro North Stations and some stations had broken windows, cracked platforms and peeling paint. Grand Central Terminal was said to have maintenance problems too.
Exposed wiring was found at Long Island Rail Road stations in Queens. The LIRR has 26 stations in the city. The most common problems were broken staircases, litter, rusted metal and deteriorating platform edges.
Officials from both railroads said the problems cited by the comptroller would be fixed.
