Another Working Cabbie Shot, Killed On Long Island
SHIRLEY, N.Y. (1010 WINS) -- A cabbie was shot and killed while on the job early Tuesday morning on Long Island, marking the second fatal shooting in the past four days of a working driver.
Mona Rivera reports.
John Attrino (left), 53, was shot at about 2:55 a.m. at the Shirley train station, according to authorities. He was taken to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital, where he later died, police said.
Police said the motive for the shooting is unclear, and they don't believe the shooting is related to the shooting of a cab driver in Nassau County over the weekend.
A dispatcher at Hampton Coach Inc. says Atrino had been a cabbie for 20 years and that he had worked for Hampton Coach for about a year.
The cabbie is the second driver to be fatally shot during what authorities have deemed possible robberies in the past four days.
Michael Xavier, 43, of Commack worked as a night driver for Long Island Checker Cab Company of New Hyde Park, and according to police he was found dead in a vacant lot Saturday in Elmont.
Xavier was attacked inside the cab and was found about a half a mile from where he was sent to pick up his passengers, police said. The cab crashed through a fence around the lot where Xavier's body was dumped.
Nassau Police have identified two persons of interest who they believe may have been involved in shooting.
The first man is described as a black male, 5'11' to 6'2," clean shaven, in his mid-20's with a dark complexion. Police said he is heavy-set with short dark-colored hair, and was wearing a "shiny type" jacket with a fur-trimmed hood.
The second person of interest is described as a light-skinned black or Hispanic male, 5'5" to 5'7," with a medium build. He is in his mid-20's, has facial hair and was wearing a black jacket with possibly a hooded sweatshirt underneath.
