NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- With a smile as bright as a child on Christmas morning Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly happily unwrapped a gift for the NYPD Thursday -- the new recruiting class will still go on with recruits entering the academy in January.
Steve Sandberg reports.
"Apparently there has been an agreement to have 250 recruits in January and at least 250 in July," Kelly said. "I don't know what changed...the speaker is the one to speak here," Kelly told reporters.
A thankful Kelly said class will be reduced, but that the infusion of cash will keep the NYPD academy going.
Like many city agencies the police department faced devastating budget cuts, which threatened the entire recruiting class.
"Obviously I will just say that the police were and are a very high priority to us in the city council," Council Speaker Christine Quinn said.
Quinn said lawmakers have been able to scrape up $20 million in extra spending money for areas previously targeted for cuts - and that included the NYPD.
