Wintry Mix Forces Closures, Icy Roads Across Tri-State Area

NEW YORK (1010 WINS/AP)  -- A mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain made for slick driving conditions from Buffalo to New York City's northern suburbs Wednesday, forcing several hundred schools across the state to cancel classes or delay opening.

John Montone reports.

Up to 3 inches of snow fell in parts of the Adirondacks and Mohawk Valley. Forecasts called for some areas of northern New York to receive 4 to 8 inches by Thursday, with less around Albany and the Hudson Valley.

Freezing rain was the main problem in sections of eastern New York, where several accidents were reported on the Thruway and nearly two dozen flights were canceled at Albany International Airport.

The treacherous driving conditions forced school closings or delays from Jamestown to Westchester County. In Buffalo, police officials said a weather-related accident resulted in an officer suffering minor injuries when a vehicle slid into her patrol car at an accident scene along an expressway.

A bus taking students to an elementary school in suburban Buffalo was involved in an accident Wednesday morning. Williamsville Central School District officials said none of the students was injured.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning through 7 a.m. Thursday for much of eastern New York.

The storm came nearly a month after an ice storm socked much of upstate New York, knocking out power to almost 300,000 utility customers for up to a week.
