SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) -- Syracuse University says it is laying off 48 full time employees and will eliminate another 71 vacant positions in an effort to contain costs.
Syracuse Chancellor Nancy Cantor announced the job cuts Wednesday in an e-mail to university employees.
The layoffs are part of the university's attempt to save $8 million in the current academic year and $11 million in the next year by cutting costs in administrative and support units.
Syracuse spokesman Kevin Quinn says salaried employees will be paid through Jan. 15, while hourly employees will be paid through Jan. 14.
The employees to be laid off range from directors and managers to technicians and clerks. Quinn says there are no faculty affected.
