N.Y. Public Library Closes Stacks for Lead Tests

NEW YORK (AP)  -- The central stacks at the New York Public Library, closed since last month, are expected to re-open this week after testing of some old lead paint showed no health hazard to staff or the public.

Workers checking exterior windows at the main library on Fifth Avenue were concerned about the paint's condition, and the stacks were closed on Dec. 20 so that testing could be done, a library spokesman told The New York Times.

The central stacks contain 1.8 million items.
