NEW YORK (AP) -- A Queens man faces attempted murder charges after authorities said he stabbed a police officer in the eye and left him in critical condition. Prosecutors say two other officers suffered less serious wounds.
Neil Perreira is hospitalized for observation after being charged Friday on counts that also include attempted aggravated murder and assault. Prosecutors did not know whether he had a lawyer, and a possible phone number for him rang unanswered Friday evening.
Prosecutors say the officers were called to Perreira's home Thursday and found him chopping vegetables in the kitchen. They say he shut himself in the bedroom, then opened the door and lashed out at Sgt. Timothy Smith.
Prosecutors say Officers Daniel Sjoberg and Edward Simon were hurt as they tried to subdue Perreira.
If convicted, the 32-year-old Perreira faces 25 years to life in prison.
