SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine -- Sen. John McCain says students at the New School should take a courtesy lesson.
McCain appeared today at a fundraiser in Maine for a Republican gubernatorial hopeful. He told reporters he was saddened by the reception he received on Friday from hecklers during his commencement speech at the New School.
Dozens of faculty members and students at the Manhattan school had turned their backs and raised signs in protest. They had said McCain's support for the Iraq war and opposition to gay rights and legal abortion do not keep with the prevailing views on campus.
The Arizona senator says he has spoken at schools throughout the country but never before found himself in a situation in which it became difficult for him to get his message across.
He says maybe the students at the New School could learn a lesson in courtesy from the students at Liberty University in Virginia.
