Cops: Attempted Robbery Leads To Fatal Midtown Crash

NEW YORK (1010 WINS)  -- Police say two people robbing and beating a woman with a baseball bat near Times Square in Manhattan fled in a car when officers arrived, then crashed into a private sanitation truck.

Just after 3 a.m., police responded to a report of an armed robbery at the train station near West 49th Street and Seventh Avenue, when officers say they saw a man assaulting a woman near West 52nd and Broadway.

As officers chased the suspect, he jumped into a car and attempted to flee the scene traveling on West 52nd Street.  However, the car collided with a private sanitation truck at Seventh Avenue, police said.

The suspected robber was pronounced dead at the scene. The suspected getaway driver, 25, a woman, was critically injured in the crash and taken to Cornell Medical Center.

The assault victim was transported to St. Luke's Hospital in stable condition.
