Did Camden Schools Rip Off School Kids?

CAMDEN, N.J. (1010 WINS)  -- For years, students at Camden's H.B. Wilson Elementary School have been told to bring money, between $10 and $30, to help pay for field trips for places such as Hershey Park and New York.

But the Board of Education pays the full cost of the trips.

A group of parents who learned that is demanding the school district give them a full refund, and answers about what where their money went.

One mother said she had to pay not only $12 for her child to go on a May 4 field trip, but also another $12 for herself as a chaperone. ``We came to find out we were not to pay at all,'' Sunday Standard told The Philadelphia Inquirer for Tuesday's newspapers.

The district's business administrator, John Amato, told The Courier-Post of Cherry Hill that he did not know the specifics of what happened at Wilson. ``One thing Camden does not do is charge for field trips,'' he said. ``It just gets from bad to worse with that situation there.''

The school district in Camden has no shortage of scandals. And this year, H.B Wilson has been at the center of several of them.

The principal there, Michael Hailey, was one of three district administrators suspended earlier this month. All three are being investigated for allegedly submitting phony vouchers to request pay for attending parent conferences that were never held.

The school, along with another, U.S. Wiggins Elementary, is also being investigated for unusually high scores on standardized tests.

And this month, a cafeteria worker at the school and an alleged accomplice were arrested and charged with stealing boxes of biscuits, pears, applesauce, bread and other food that was supposed to go to students.
