BX Ice Cream Truck Burns After Crashing

NEW YORK (1010 WINS)  -- An ice cream truck driver is clinging to life after he smacked into a concrete column in The Bronx, police said.

Police say that passing motorists were able to pull the driver from the truck after the crash.

Segundo Tagan, 51, of The Bronx, was driving a Mister Softee Truck along the Bruckner Expressway near 145th Street, when he suddenly lost control and crashed just before 10 p.m. last night.

The truck then ignited in flames, cops said.

The man was taken to Jacobi Hospital where he is listed in critical condition.

Relatives said Tagan was bleeding in his brain and had lacerations on his legs and face.

"The family is suffering and in pain," said Edwin Tagan, 50, the victim's brother. "We are praying for him," he said.

"My mother is 83 and she has a pacemaker. We are afraid to give her any bad news about the family so we're not going to tell her."
