NEW YORK (1010 WINS)  -- During his weekly Sunday radio address, Mayor Bloomberg announced that if the Court of Appeals does not rule in favor of the city issuing same sex marriage licenses, he will work with others in the city and state legislatures to establish a new law that establishes ‘marriage equality.’

"I believe all New Yorkers should have the right to marry whom ever they choose regardless of sexual orientation," said Bloomberg. 

The court of appeals is scheduled to takes up the issue of same sex marriage this week.

Bloomberg also stated that the city has worked hard over the past few years to ensure that the rights of the gay community are protected. Same sex partners of city workers receive health benefits if they're registered as domestic partners.

Bloomberg furthered argued that “I do not believe the government should be in the business of telling us who we can, and can't marry...as mayor, i have an obligation to enforce the laws of the city and the state, but I also have an equal obligation to work to change laws that I believe are not in our city's best interest."
