Costumed NYC Subway 'Stewardesses' Get Attention

NEW YORK (AP)  -- Women who appear in the New York City subways dressed as 1940s stewardesses are being asked to change their official-looking Web site.

The smiling women call themselves "MTA service specialists.'' They also use MySpace and YouTube to offer gently cheeky commentary about service and fares.

They help mothers with baby strollers and encourage riders to be courteous. Their origins are, well, a little mysterious.

The Daily News says the Metropolitan Transportation Authority wants the "stewardesses'' to stop using its logo.

MTA spokesman Kevin Ortiz quipped Thursday that the women should go to Albany to get lawmakers to support the transit system. The MTA approved fare increases and service cuts on Wednesday.

On Myspace the women exclaim, "We are the MTA Service Speciailists!" and identify themselves as Kae Burke, Kiki Valentine, Lauren Larken and Anya Sapozhnikova.

On the website it says, "We set out on the rails beneath this great metropolis to improve New York City transit by inspiring and encouraging straphangers to be more courteous and aware of the simple changes they can make themselves so the subway is more enjoyable for everyone aboard. Thank you for riding the MTA! "
