NEW YORK -- Test blasts to remove bedrock from the base of the World Trade Center site were done Monday in preparation for the construction of the Freedom Tower.
The blast tests will be reviewed by the Port Authority, the New York City Fire Department and Tishman Construction company.
The blasts will be performed three to four times a day about 3 times a week for the next two months, beginning as early as Wednesday once Monday's blasts pass inspection.
Tishman Construction says aboout 50 to 60 blasts two months will remove 7,000 cubic yards of rock.
The explosions, 85 feet below street level and lasting only a minute or two each, will save workers the time jack-hammering the bedrock.
