No Deal after Three Hour Meeting on Connecticut Budget

Connecticut Gov. M. Jodi Rell and state legislative leaders met for about three hours at the governor's mansion but didn't reach a final deal on a new two-year state budget.

Spokesmen for the governor and lawmakers say they'll hold more budget talks on Monday. Officials are under some pressure because the current fiscal year ends Tuesday, and Rell would have to sign executive orders to pay the state's bills starting Wednesday.

Legislators and Rell didn't comment on specifics of Sunday's session.

The Republican governor and Democrats who control the General Assembly have been at odds over how to cover a massive budget deficit estimated to be as high as $8.8 billion for the next two fiscal years.
